On June 17, Game Freak released the first-ever Pokémon expansion for “Pokémon Sword” and “Pokémon Shield” on the Nintendo Switch. This expansion was ‘Isle of Armor’ and it is Pokemon’s first DLC.
In the past, when Pokémon wanted to introduce new content, its creators usually released a third game. These games are Pokémon Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Platinum, Black 2, and White 2. However, Isle of Armor is more than just a simple third installment game in the series.

To explain what made this DLC so great, you need to understand where Pokémon Sword and Shield began. When Sword and Shield was in early development, the team announced that all previous Pokémon would not appear in the games, causing major controversy in the Pokémon community. There was a whole campaign about “bringing back the National Dex” – a device that contains all Pokemon – when the games only allowed Pokemon in the Galar Pokedex. With this new expansion, over 100 old Pokémon species have been allowed into the game and four new Pokémon have been added.

The Isle of Armor has an all-new story and lore that fleshes it all out in more detail. “Isle” also has a contour line, depending on when you go to the island. If you go to the island as soon as you get your starter pokemon and pokedex, the levels of the pokemon will be similar to the level of your partner pokemon. But if you visit after becoming the champion of the Galar region, the Pokemon levels will be in the 60s and 70s. This way you can enjoy them anytime in the game.

The Expansion Pass costs $30, which seems like a lot at first, until you realize there’s a second part to this pass. Game Freak is currently working on the “Crowned Tundra” portion of this pass, which will introduce yet another new area, story, and Pokémon.

Overall, the Pokemon community was really happy with the Isle of Armor DLC and are ultimately happy with the Pokemon that have been added to the game. If you love Pokemon and have some extra cash, buy the expansion pass and dive into another part of the Pokémon world.
