Marion Ramsey, ‘Police Academy’ Officer Hooks, Dies at 73


Marion Ramsey, who starred as Office Laverne Hooks in the police academy franchisee, died.

Deadline reports that Ramsey’s death at 73 was announced by his management team. Although the cause of death has not yet been revealed, they noted that she had recently been ill.

Born on May 10, 1947, Ramsey’s career began on stage, appearing in the original Broadway production and the acclaimed musical’s nationwide touring company. Hello Dolly! She went on to be part of all of the Tony Awards nominees in 1978 Eubie!, a review of the songs of the famous jazz composer Eubie Blake. In between, she had a starring role opposite Bette Davis in Miss Moffattalthough the show closed in out-of-town tryouts, and was on an episode of The Jeffersons.

Ramsey however achieved greater visibility with his portrayal of Officer Hooks in the 1984s. police academy, where an unlikely group of misfit cadets train to become law enforcement officers in big cities. She played the shy and sensitive Hooks, whose high-pitched voice morphed into a powerful scream when she needed to assert her authority. Ramsey appeared in his annual sequels until 1989 Police Academy 6: City Under Siege. Although not in the seventh episode, she reprized the role in 1993 for live-to-video John Virgo: play for laughs and a 2006 episode of the animated series Robot Chicken.

Ramsey also lent his voice to the animation The Addams Family series, which aired on ABC in 1992-93. More recently, she found police academy co-stars Steve Guttenberg and Michael Winslow for the 2015 Syfy Network film Lavalantulaas well as its sequel, 2 Lava 2 Lantula!
