Israel has exported cannabis seeds abroad for the first time.
Israel’s Agriculture Ministry said in a statement yesterday that seeds from plant science company BetterSeeds had been sent to the United States. There they will be reviewed for domestic marketing, with more exports to follow.
The Israeli government changed its medical cannabis export rules last year to allow the export of cannabis seeds. The ministry seeks to diversify its exports, boost domestic agriculture and develop the medical marijuana industry by exporting cannabis seeds, according to The Times of Israel.
What is that? Cannabis seeds grow in cannabis plants which produce the drug of the same name. Cannabis is often called marijuana.
BetterSeeds uses gene editing technology to grow crops. The central Israel-based company’s goal is to grow crops sustainably using less arable land.
Why is this important: Medical marijuana is a growing industry in Israel, and some companies have recently made significant profits. Recreational marijuana is also quite common in Israel. It’s not legal, but has been decriminalized somewhat recently. There is growing pressure to fully legalize drugs in Israel.
